I wrote yesterday about the neighborhood along East Street across I70 to the south of Fletcher Place. Of course, that neighborhood also spreads to the east and west of East Street. God is working there.
God’s work is being done through a young couple (25 years old) named Derek and Laura. The only reason they moved into the neighborhood was to share Jesus with those who live there. Many of these people are disadvantaged, so they struggle with life. Dat House is truly a place of community, compassion and hope in the middle of an area of suffering and little hope.
Dat House is home to Derek and Laura and three others who minister in a variety of ways. Laura has helped strippers feel like persons of worth through having a day of pampering for these women. Laura and a friend took gifts to the women in the strip clubs during the Christmas season.
Derek and Laura care for children who hang around this place of love. These kids have a home, but find at Dat House some practical help and encouragement that they wouldn’t otherwise have.
There are also a couple of formerly homeless men who are now safe at Dat House. One is a former cocaine addict and member of a successful rock band. One struggles considerably with other issues. Both follow Jesus.
Everyone at Dat House go to homeless camps located closer to the downtown Indianapolis core. They take food and toiletries to those living on the streets.
Last Saturday, I had the privilege of performing a wedding at Dat House. More about ”dat” tomorrow.
